Compostable Materials
PLA (polylactic acid) + PBAT (polybutylene adipate/terephthalate): This is one of the most widely used and stable compostable material combinations. PLA is mainly derived from renewable plant resources such as corn and cassava, and has good biodegradability; PBAT is an aliphatic-aromatic copolyester with excellent flexibility and thermal stability. Under what conditions can compostable bags degrade? How long does it take to degrade?
There are two types of composting: industrial composting and home composting. Products that meet the EN13432 or ASTM D6400 standards can usually decompose into carbon dioxide, water and biomass within 90-180 days under industrial composting conditions (specific temperature, humidity, microbial environment). Products that meet the OK Compost HOME standard can degrade more slowly in a home composting environment. The specific degradation time will be affected by the actual composting conditions.
What happens if the compostable bag is discarded into a regular landfill?
In anaerobic landfills lacking oxygen and microorganisms, compostable bags will degrade very slowly, similar to traditional plastics. We strongly recommend that used compostable bags be put into designated organic recycling or composting treatment systems to realize their environmental value.
